John was born in England, in January 1943. He fought his way from childhood poverty to business and professional success. He started his first business at age 8, several others followed, including creating his own multi-level marketing operation (this kind of business model didn’t have a name then), and by age 21 John bought and furnished his first house for cash, as a wedding present for his new wife, Shirley. They have been happily married for 44 years.
While still in his early teens, John adapted parts of the esoteric side of an ancient family combat and survival system to create his own personal success achievement system.
This led to him being the original creator of the concept now known as ‘mind maps’ (later taught to Tony Buzan and made public by him).
John was also one of the first international instructors in such applied psychology techniques as advanced memory techniques and advanced high-speed reading.
He didn’t just originate and teach these techniques, but continuously used and developed his own system and techniques to personally acquire a staggering array of knowledge and professional qualifications.
The clients John has served and advised include many ‘household name’ businesses, major corporations, top professionals (including the partners of major City of London Accountancy Practices) and individual clients (including TV and International Film Stars). Content to remain anonymously in the background, John has been the ‘secret weapon’ of many very successful people over the last forty+ years.
John is not only experienced in ‘business turnaround’, but has personally started, owned, managed and built multiple long-term businesses of all sizes, from sole practitioner to multi-national, including a public limited company.
He also Founded, Chaired and held Office in, a number of professional societies and organizations.
In addition to being a successful entrepreneur and ‘business heavyweight’, John is a highly qualified and multi-disciplined professional. John describes himself as a ‘multi-disciplined smart-arse’. That’s because he has been ranked by his professional peers as amongst the best in the UK and the World in several professional disciplines, including accountancy, finance, financial services, sales, and marketing. His friends, clients and protégés describe his knowledge as ‘long, deep and wide’.
In 1986, he was honoured with ‘The Freedom Of The City’ by the City of London.
And, for each of the last 22 years, he has been reported by Debretts’ researchers as being one of the top 3 per cent most influential people in the UK.
In 2006, John was selected by the International Biographical Centre for its “Cambridge Blue Book” 2006 Inaugural Edition as one of only 4000 leaders worldwide, noted for supreme excellence in their field, to merit inclusion.
In 2008, John was awarded their International Peace Prize by the United Cultural Convention.
Other Peer and Establishment recognitions include John being rated by:
- the Institute of Chartered Accountants as one of the top 3 percent of CA’s (1995)
- the Life Insurance Association, one of the top 39 Financial Advisers in the UK (1996)
- the Million Dollar Round Table, one of the top 2 percent of Financial Advisers in the World
- the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management as a ‘Companion’, (i.e. Senior Fellow) the highest UK sales qualification & accolade
- etc.,.
John has retired twice. The first time at age 37, and again at age 60, when he disposed of ownership and controlling interests in 23+ businesses, which John and his wife, Shirley had built, including a wide range of business types and a Public Limited Company.
The Public Limited Company traded successfully for 21 years, before they disposed of it, and they closed another one of their businesses after some 24 years.
(N.B. Only 2 per cent of businesses survive for 20 years.)
Over the years, John has acquired a widespread and growing international following.
He is now writing up the lessons learned during his 57 years of business & professional experience, for his sons' use.
As a distraction from that objective, Mitch Meyerson and Jay Conrad-Levinson have somehow talked John into being a co-author of “Guerrilla Marketing On The Front Lines”. This book was published in August 2008, official book launch 24th September 2008, and has immediately hit the Amazon No.1 Best Seller spot.

Congratulations on your #1 spot!! What an extraordinary accomplishment! Your work is widely recognized, and how wonderful that you are reaching so many people!! I met Jill Lublin several years ago, who I believe is also involved with this project.
Thumbprints represents the philosophy that everyone is born with a uniqueness like no other and that our mission in life is to discover our gifts, cultivate our talents in a way that can make a difference. I primarily work with youth and young adults to help them get into their 'groove' of life. My methodology came after I was involved in a serious accident. Among broken bones, I also had a head injury, which wasn't the greatest, given my previous occupation! However, my 'intuition' was greatly heightened during this time. One result is my Thumbprint Methodology and Cards, which are used to help remove stress and blocks that interfere with learning and life. (I used this to help heal myself) Everyone experiences immediate changes, and I've seen hundreds of amazing results (ie. kids having challenges at school, suddenly can begin doing better, anxiety is replaced with calm, anger and outbursts make way for people to become more engaged.) It's made my personal challenges now a gift, since I have been able to turn things around and help others. I'm just in the process of packaging my cards. They are now being used in some schools, and my intention is to get them to help many others! With students having more challenges in school and life today (we now have a dropout rate in our country at a shocking rate of 40%), this is one solution that can help. I hope I have not provided too much information.....it's somewhat complex in some ways, but actually very simple. Thanks for asking, and feel free to write back.
