Hello Cadita,

What books have made an impact on me?
Well, of course, superheros read at very high speeds. ;-) So, after some 60 years of reading, that covers a lot of ground, doesn't it?

I'm a bit of an unusual animal, insofar as I have made it a 'professional hobby' to study and master new business related professions - sometimes several at a time. And that means not only reading many voluminous and dense tomes, but mastering their content too.

I can't say that there are many 'popular' books that have made much impact on my life, although I do enjoy reading extensively, but what I have learned from my advanced professional studies and my various mentors over the years have made a considerable difference. For example:
- my knowledge of law, in particular of contract law, is periodically invaluable, and has underpinned most of my business transactions;
- my understanding of the sciences, mathematics and engineering has been valuable in many of my own projects - and in my understanding of 'how the universe works'...
- being and engineer and industrial manager has enabled me to run and consult for engineering, manufacturing and industrial businesses,
- my extensive profession knowledge of finance, insurance, financial services, investment, etc., etc., has contributed to my being able to generate wealth for my clients, both personal and corporate clients, including banks, insurance and investment companies,
- extensive professional business and management qualifications and experience has enabled me to not only build businesses for myself, but help others turn around failing businesses or start and run successful ones
...Oh, my goodness, this list could go on and on, couldn't it? So I'd better stop writing it.
So very often it is not the words on the page, but what personal wisdom and experience you bring to their interpretation that makes a big difference.

I remember, about 25 years ago, having some transatlantic telephone conversations with a new multi-millionaire business associate. We were comparing notes to see what we might learn from each other. At one time, in our early twenties, we had been doing similar things, he on Wall Street and me in the City of London. Except that he had earned maybe 50 times what I had earned on those particular activities. When we discussed the details, it turned out that we were doing almost exactly the same thing, but with one slight difference - and that slight difference made all the difference to what we each earned.

Over the years, I have had the good fortune to learn from some excellent mentors - such as Sir Jack Cohen (founder of Tesco) and W. Clement Stone (founder of the Combined Insurance Company), and many, many others. Clemmy, as you know, was a great advocate of 'positive thinking' and was a good friend of Napoleon Hill who wrote 'Think and Grow Rich'.
Additionally, my various professional studies brought me into contact with many other mentors with different business outlooks and lessons to teach me from their own experience.

From all these studies, advice and guidance from my own mentors AND in particular from my own business and wealth creation experiences, I have developed many of my own philosophies, one of which is, "your theoretical knowledge should always be way ahead of your practical experience."
So, we can learn something from whatever we read. Oftentimes we see insights that the original author did not intend or was not even aware that we would be able to see.

For example, I was reading an autobiography about a great nineteen century marketer and promoter. It was excellently researched and told as a series of fascinating stories - but, from my professional perspective I could see 'how the trick was done'. I understood the techniques he had used even though they were not addressed in the text, and how he put them together to achieve worldwide success and acclaim. The insights excited me and I was explaining them to one of my proteges, when she said, "...but don't you realise John, you are the only one that can see this. You must write a book to reveal these techniqes to others." So, I might do that sometime.
Whatever any text tells us, we each bring our own unique lives and insights to the experience. That, in my view, is why one person will get different lessons from any given text from someone else.

So often people do not want to learn 'the basics'. They want to rush ahead to 'the good stuff'. But all experts get better by returning to and honing their mastery of 'the basics'. You have to master the 'pure' (theory) before you can become master of 'the applied'. That is often a hard, frustrating, wearying process. As one of my proteges said to me, "amongst your glorious victories, you must have had some bloody defeats". Well, I have, and I learned from all of them. It's that 'wisdom' that I have passed on to my own proteges and now am in the process of passing on to my sons.

Candita, if you expected a list of books, over my lifetime I really have assembled too many to comprise a manageable list. Indeed, my libraries are extensive and consume a lot of storage space.
I don't know if I've answered your question satisfactorily, but I hope I've given you some food for thought. ;-)

Friendly Hug,

John

Great idea about the Habitat connection. I'm actually working with Habitat International right now! ;-) Great minds think alike.

Also, I'd love the opportunity to chat more on book marketing for your great book. Perhaps you and I and Rick could get on a quick call?

Hi John, It's true people spend so much of their time dealing with their possessions. It feels good to truly help them take control. Do you have a book with Morgan James? My book Clean Your Home Healthy: Green Cleaning Made Easy is due out this month. I am spending most of my time spreading the word about how green practices can change the world!

Best,

Hi Jack, I am doing well. How are you? Do you have your book in hand yet? If so I would love to buy one. I have been incredibly busy lining up PR for when my book becomes available in a couple of weeks. What's happening with you?

Thanks Don. I am counting on having the book in those two places. It is going to print as we speak so things should start happening pretty quickly. What is the definition of a bestseller? I can't seem to get an answer to that question...

Candita,
I have not pushed a "Green" book yet. Most of my clients have been in the Inspirational and Leadership fields. But if you can get your book listed on Amazon or BN, I can help you make it a best seller.
