A Ballad for Baghdad: An Ex-Hippie Chick Viet Nam War Protester's Three Years in Iraq
To be published by Morgan James in November, 2008
About Me:
I am on my maiden voyage as an author aboard the SS Morgan James. My adventure in this process (as well as much of life) has included the presence of 30 foot swells some of the time, thankfully with Jesus at the helm. But, I firmly believe It's ALL good!
I am happily married to Steve Turner, and between the two of us we have four grown children. We own a small over the road transportation company called 8th Day Trucking. In addition, I have my own wellness business, which was born out of the need to deal with my husband's former near fatal illness which had him bed ridden for two years. If you are interested in learning more about the link between nutrition, disease, and prevention, go to www.aliturner.com
We spent two years on the mission field in Mexico, living at an orphanage and starting a school for the kids. We would have stayed there forever, but Steve's illness forced us to return to the States. However, there were many silver linings waiting for us, not the least of which was having the profound privilege of my being in Baghdad from '04 to '07, which is the topic of the book.
I had the great joy of being a part of a praise and worship team that ministered to the soldiers in what was Saddam's former fishing lodge. I play guitar, piano and do vocals, and even got a chance to teach music to some soldiers.
I have written and recorded an unplugged ballad that shares the book's title that will be the bonus for the book.
No matter what you may think of the war in Iraq, there are remarkable stories that you are not hearing on Cranky News Network. As someone who long ago tried to shut down Wright Patterson AF Base in protest to the War in Vietnam, and who was turned upside down by my experience in The Great Sandbox, I have many stories to tell-- gleaned from soldiers, Iraqis as well as my own journals. I gave my word I would tell their stories, hence the book.
